We found 4 Short-eared Owls today (2/16/08) on Hayes Rd. in Geauga Cty. - midway between Middlefield & Mesopotamia. They were north of Rt. 87 on Hayes Rd.: 1 on the first block between Rt. 87 & Nauvoo Rd. and 3 on the next block to the north between Nauvoo & Peters Rds.

The owls were actively flying/hunting the fields in full daylight - first seen at 4:50 p.m. in today's brilliant sunlight. We had amazing views as they coursed low over the fields; with one owl set on a path directly at us until just a few feet away!

Two Rough-legged Hawks (both color morphs) were also seen in the same area on Hayes Rd. Eastern Bluebirds and Horned Larks were other notable sightings along Hayes today.

An adult Peregrine Falcon was spotted on the 13th atop the Tower East office bldg. at the corner of Warrensville Ctr. Rd. & Chagrin Blvd. in Shaker Heights. Perhaps this will prove a new Cuyahoga Cty. nesting site.
