For those who have not yet heard, public television's "Nature" will air
a program on the interdependence of two diminishing species--the red
knot and the horseshoe crab--this Sunday night, at 8 on many stations,
but check your local listing.
        Involved is the knot subspecies we see here in Ohio: Calidris canutus
rufa. We see them usually in fall, mostly inexperienced juveniles that
stray from the main track the adults have followed earlier. Colorful
northbound adults in spring are pretty rare here, but we'll see many of
them in this film, and learn about their migrations, and those of the
ancient horseshoe crabs as well. We'll also see some of the selfish
offensive things humans do that imperil these birds (and the crabs they
depend on) as they stop along an inspiring journey of many thousands of
miles to the breeding grounds.
