Hi all,
Ryan Steiner and I birded the Holmes County area today. Our first stop was the Hoary Redpoll at 2230 TR 415, Dundee, Ohio (Holmes County). A group of nearly 30 of us had great views of it as it fed among the Common Redpolls at the feeders. Also present was a single Chipping Sparrow.
Our next stop was a private pine grove near Sugar Creek, Ohio (Tuscarawas Co.) which yielded a single Long-eared Owl.
We continued on to the Harris’s Sparrow at 31412 TR 227 near New Bedford, Ohio (Coshocton Co.). After searching for a quite a while, we finally located it on the opposite side of the creek among some bushes. It eventually flew across the road and teed up offering good views.
Following the Harris’s Sparrow, Ryan and I continued on to Killbuck Marsh which yielded 11 species of waterfowl, Horned Grebe, Red-headed Woodpecker and a Northern Mockingbird.
Our last stop of the day was Mohican State Forest to see if the Evening Grosbeaks were still around with no luck.
Also in the Holmes County area were countless numbers of Horned Larks and Snow Buntings as well as fewer numbers of Lapland Longspurs and Eastern Meadowlarks. Vultures were also plentiful with both species present.
