Well, now that the snow is melting, the Snow Buntings that have graced our yard for the last couple of days have flown for parts unknown. We had about 30 this morning, along with similar numbers of Horned Larks, and around 50 American Tree Sparrows. They were joined by 4 Red-winged Blackbirds, a few of each of Dark-eyed Juncos, Mourning Doves, and Song Sparrows. This afternoon, with warmer temperatures and light rain, the buntings were gone and the larks dispersed to the surrounding fields. The tree sparrows remained. Other feeder birds included 4 Carolina Chickadees, a White-breasted Nuthatch, a moulting female Northern Cardinal, one Red-bellied Woodpecker, a few House Sparrows, and an intermittent flock of 25 or so European Starlings.

The Red-winged Blackbirds were singing, as were the song sparrows. The chickadees were giving a variety of calls but no song. I thought I heard a Pine Siskin, but I couldn't spot it. Spring must be close!
