This morning while scouting for tomorrow's Kirtland Bird Club outing...

Avon Lake Power: The ice edge is pretty far offshore, and so were the birds. The usual 3 gulls and small numbers of common goldeneye, red-breasted and common mergansers, lesser scaup, and surf scoter.

Lorain Harbor (formerly "Hot Waters"): mostly open water, very few birds other than gulls, and only moderate numbers of them.

Wellington Upground Reservoir (more or less in order of decreasing quantity): American coot, Canada geese, mallards, ring-necked ducks, ruddy ducks, redheads, lesser scaup, canvasback, American black ducks, greater scaup, bufflehead, northern pintail, common merganser, pied-billed grebe.

  Caley Reservation: Seven long-eared owls.

Oberlin Reservoir (not many of anything, but a nice selection): Canada geese, mallard, black ducks, common and hooded mergansers, lesser scaup, ring-necked duck, pintail, canvasback, redhead.

  Craig Caldwell,
  Westlake
