This morning (7:30am) I wasn't able to go on any organized early bird outings so I was filling up the feeder and putting out fresh water in the birdbath. I heard very loud bird calling from two directions that I thought were Blue Jays imitating hawks. But it was very loud and when I looked the one looked too large. I went and got the camera and binocs and each had very orangish breasts and entire orange heads with dark eyes. Their backs were brownish with some white spots. Each were in trees in different yards behind me. The one flew past the one bird and landed further down and was bigger than a Coopers Hawk. It had the same squealing call that is mentioned in Sibley. It was the same as the call on the Cornell website. I am not very good with identifying hawks and live in suburbia so having two adult RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS near my backyard was new to me. Next time I hear the Blue Jay call imitating a hawk I will be more vigilant.
