Congratulations to Ryan Steiner. Ryan ended January with 138 species in Ohio. He tried and failed twice for a Gray Catbird that is still being seen 10 minutes from his high school ( I tried 3 times and still didn't see it). Ryan also ran out of time to chase a Harris's Sparrow that showed up in northern Coshocton County. Ryan will be graduating this spring and attending college in Maryland, studying wildlilfe management (and ornithology I imagine). I've had the pleasure of birding with Ryan this month and he is very good, plus has the energy of youth!! Ben Morrison and Kent Miller and others have also spent days in the field with Ryan. I must add that I am delighted to see so many excellent young birders in Ohio. They are taking birding to a new level, one that the older generation of birders can learn from.

As someone that doesn't do well with the long winter season, I've been energized by the friendly competition of the Big January attempts. Everyone I know has been helping everyone else find as many birds as possible. In our home area here there were at least 6 birders who topped 100, and probably quite a few more around the state. How many were there 10 years ago? It's good for birding. Happy February birding to all.
