The Short-eared Owls we first reported earlier this year were still in the vicinity of the Wildlife Production Areas on St Rt. 18 today at 6:30 pm. Since late January and early February we have not seen them regularly. Today there were 3. One was on the ground feeding and two others were ranging over the open fields nearby. One of the birds was ranging more than a mile East of the "production areas" . They seem to be covering a larger area than we are used to at Killdeer Plains. Except for the small fields that are posted the area is extensively farmed and perhaps prey is not as plentiful. The owls have been seen a number of times beginning at the rail crossing for up to a mile on either side of the road
The location is about 1 1/2 mi East of the I-75, North Baltimore exit on St Rt 18 at the east edge of the Village of Bairdstown. DeLorme block is 36C4. .
It is great to have these beauties so close to home. Hope some of you are able to enjoy them as much as we do.
