Following Bob Royse's report of two White-winged Scoters among other ducks,
grebes, and loons at the Watermark Quarry, I went down this afternoon to
what I presume is the body of water he is referring to.....the large, deep
lake in the big rock pit just barely west of McKinley Rd. and about 1/2 mile
south of Trabue Rd., with the island in the middle where a G-b Heron rookery
is located. Well, I didn't find any White-winged Scoters, I guess they must
have moved on already. But there was one adult male Surf Scoter at the
southernmost end of the lake. No loons, at least not that I could see, it
was hard to find a place to get a clear view of the whole lake. I also saw
4 D-c Cormorants, a Horned Grebe, 5 or 6 P-b Grebes, a pair of Hooded
Mergansers, 2 Tree Swallows, a Belted Kingfisher, and other common stuff.
Pretty cool! I haven't seen a single scoter (of any species) since I lived
in Seattle 9 years ago!! It's weird to see a scoter on a lake....I'm used
to seeing them on salt water.
Good birding,
Nate Nye
