I spent 5.5 hours this morning checking a variety of locations around
Brookville Lake and at Whitewater State Park. Waterfowl scattered but
with concentrations off Buck Creek Golf Course and across from Hannah
Creek Ramp. Highlights:
Canada Goose 351, including three flocks of 26 to 41 high overhead
and seeming to be active migrants.
Gadwall 4
American Wigeon 20 (mainly off the golf course south of Sagamore resort)
American Black Duck 55
MallardXAm Black Duck hybrid 2
MALLARD X NORTHERN PINTAIL hybrid 1 (drake, white chest with white
neck ring, green head, blue-gray bill with dark culmen, body
basically mallard-like, neck and tail (including the uppertail
coverts ("duck tails" on mallards) and rectrices) relatively
elongated compared to mallards but not fully of pintail character.)
Mallard 1050 (including one leucistic ("blond", cream colored) hen)
Northern Pintail 44
Green-winged Teal 26
Canvasback 6
Redhead 18
Ring- necked Duck 156
Lesser Scaup 75 (none among the close birds were Greaters)
SURF SCOTER 2 (male and female/imm)
Bufflehead 31
Common Goldeneye 109

Sandhill Crane 5+ heard only (81 were present on the mudflats north
of Dunlapsville Causeway on 29 Feb afternoon)
Killdeer 18 (most overhead and moving as individuals, one doing
stiff-winged territorial/courtship flight)
Bonaparte's Gull 4 (first in weeks here)
Ring-billed Gull 320 (all adults)
Herring Gull 1 (first cycle)
Red-winged Blackbird 12 (widespread single adult males)
Common Grackle 5 (widespread single males)
Purple Finch 1
