Subject: Greenlawn Cemetery 3/1/2008
At Greenlawn Cemetery several birds of interest were observed. One merli=
n
was perched on top of a sycamore near the bridge area. At the thistle
feeders were several pine siskins. Also the pine warbler which has been
feeding on suet all winter was active near the feeders. Several
red-breasted nuthatches are still easily observed at the feeders. At the=
nearby Whittier Peninsula were several canvasbacks, common goldeneyes,
lesser scaup, hooded mergansers, and many American black ducks. Also the=
re
were several herring gulls mixed with the numerous ring-billed gulls. At=
the Darby Bend Lakes in Prairie Oaks Metro Park were quite a few species =
of
waterfowl. All were located in one small section of open water near the
back section of the parking lot. Species observed included canvasbacks,
redheads, ring-necked ducks, lesser scaup, ruddy ducks, gadwall, a
pied-billed grebe and many coots.=20=20

Subject: Snow Buntings - Centerburg
A couple hundred snow buntings are hanging out just north west of Centerburg. A few horned larks are mixed and a few lapland long spurs as well.
Directions: Take Rt 3 north through Centerburg. Just past the fire station turn right on RT 657.(Vannatta Rd).... bear right continuing on Rt 657 ... turn right on the first road which is a muddy dirt road... (township road 405... about 2/3 down the road you should see the flocks... Given the change in weather today could be last opportunity...

Subject: turkey vulture - geauga co.
A lone turkey vulture soared over the fields yesterday, late in
the afternoon.
5 male Red Winged Blackbirds calling. 1 Starling.
With this deep snow, the hawks hang close to the house and
barn, taking advantage of the ploughed walks and congestion
at the bird feeders.
Coopers, Red Shouldered and Red Tailed.
3 Bluebirds with 2 Robins, 30 Tree Sparrows, 4 Song Sparrows,
3 White Throated Sparrows.

Subject: Carlisle Redpolls
Greetings birders!
Wow! I finally got to see some redpolls this season, and I got to see a lot
of them! I visited the Carlisle Reservation (Lorain County Metro Parks)
feeders on Saturday afternoon and counted at least 14 Common Redpolls at one
time. A few flew in only moments after we sat down in the observation room,
and then over the next half hour, more and more flew into the trees and ate
from the thistle feeders. I hope they stick around for a little while
longer so those of you who haven't seen them yet can get up there and see
them!
They were a lot of fun to watch, and it was exciting to get a new life bird!
And even my non-birding boyfriend that was watching them with me was pretty
excited and engaged!

Subject: Ivorybill video at Amish Bird Symposium
At the Amish Bird Symposium in Adam's Co. yesterday, Dr. Geoff Hill =
showed a video of an ivory-billed woodpecker seen last year in a Florida =
panhandle swamp. Wow. It wasn't the best video because the bird was far =
away in dense swamp forest vegetation. However, you could clearly see =
that the bottom half of the wings were white when it was perched and the =
trailing edge of the wings were white when it flew. He didn't claim this =
video to be conclusive evidence, but it was good enough for me I am now =
a believer. Wow - I never thought I would see the day!! Forgive the =
deviation from strictly Ohio birds, but this was just too exciting not =
to write about.

Subject: 8 species of Candian birds at my feeders in Highland Co.
I had 8 species of "Canadian" birds (I know some of these nest in N. =
Ohio - you lucky dogs) at my feeders last week - the most I've ever seen =
at once, I think. Not bad for southern Ohio! Because I am deep in the =
forest, I don't usually get many sparrows or other meadow birds. Deep =
snow has its advantages!

Subject: White-fronted Geese at Deer Creek
My wife and I found a group of eight White-fronted Geese last night,
March 1, among the multitude of Canadas at Deer Creek State Park.
They were along the banks of the main "incoming water" in the closest
stream to the boat launch on the west side of the Deer Creek
Reservoir off of SR 207. The best views were from the parking lot at
the end of the lane on the first "street" north of the Marina/Boat
Ramp access, and were almost directly across from that parking lot.
We also had all the common diving ducks at the Reservoir, but no
puddle ducks.

Subject: Greater White-fronted Geese - Ducks - Buck Creek State Park
A friend and I birded at Buck Creek State Park (Old Delorme 66A3) this
morning and the conditions were perfect for observing ducks. Most of the
lake is frozen but there is some open water at the north end of the lake
with access off Grant Road. It was covered with waterfowl. Most common
was Canada Goose but we also saw 10 Greater White-fronted Geese, three
Tundra Swans, and 17 species of ducks. There was only a single
Canvasback but we saw about 75 Redheads and 60 Ring-necked Ducks. There
were smaller numbers of all three mergansers and a few Buffleheads and
some Common Goldeneyes. We looked over the Lesser Scaup carefully and
found one male Greater Scaup which we got to see right next to male
Lesser Scaup and we could easily see the size difference and the much
larger and differently shaped head. We also saw American Black Ducks,
maybe 50 Northern Pintails, 20 American Wigeon, 9 Green-winged Teal, a
few Gadwalls, and a Northern Shoveler. There are more shovelers below
the dam in the creek at the other end of the lake.

Returning from the Amish Birding Symposium Saturday, Ed Schlabach and I saw 5,000+ gulls (Ring-billed - at least most) from the IS 270/Rt 23 exit and south on 23 for about 3-5 miles. There were also lots of ducks, geese, crows and mixed blackbirds. Just curious if these gulls were migrating or if they have been hanging around s. Columbus?
