Big Island State Wildlife Area was hopping with bird life, particularly
waterfowl. One great egret was located within a large group of great blue
herons. Tundra swans and a great variety of dabbling and diving ducks
covered most of the open water found at the wildlife area. Particularly
large numbers of redheads, ring-necked ducks, lesser scaup, northern
pintails, and American wigeons were located within the wildlife area.
Wilson's snipes were in marshy spots and a good variety of blackbirds
including many rusty blackbirds were flying around the wildlife area. There
was also a good variety of raptors including bald eagles and rough-legged
hawks.

Killdeer Plains State Wildlife Area also had a great variety of waterfowl
with countless numbers of tundra swans. Blue-winged teals have now arrived
with the other dabbling ducks. At least five short-eared owls were located
at dusk. Also one sandhill crane flew over the Sportsman Center along with
many waterfowl.
