Gary Meszaros called to say he'd seen some phenomenal numbers of
waterfowl moving in the NW marshes today. Places like Toussaint, Little
Portage, and Metzger were relatively quiet, but he hit the mother lode
at Pickerel Creek, where among 5-10,000 ducks he had 1000 Am. wigeons
and 3-400 pintails. He had ~600 tundra swans there (plus three
rough-legged hawks), and another ~400 at Ottawa NWR. These birds are hot
to trot, and may ride this coming Gulf front north, but for the time
being their numbers are impressive.
