Today I hosted Jim O'Boyle and Steve Lee from Caesar Creek Lake. They were
visiting the Hoover Nature Preserve to do research for establishing a
Prothonotary Warbler Nest Box Trail at Caesar Lake. As they drove north from
Waynesville to Hoover Reservoir it rained cats and dogs, but when they arrived at my
place the rains stopped and we were able to go to the preserve without
getting soaked. Our purpose was research for nest box trails rather than birding,
but as we visited Mudhen Marsh, Oxbow Road and Area N, and observed the bay at
Dustin Road from the vehicle, we had some nice observations.. Waterfowl
numbers were decent at the north end of Hoover Reservoir with some nice size
rafts about. A sure sign of spring was the presence of Eastern Phoebes. Some of
the species present were:

Pied-billed Grebe
Horned Grebe
Great Blue Heron
Wood Duck
American Black Duck
Canvasback
Ring-necked Duck
Lesser Scaup
Hooded Merganser
Red-breasted Merganser
Cooper's Hawk
Eastern Phoebe
Brown Creeper
Golden-crowned Kinglet
and the usual cast of common species
