Linda and I birded at Wyandot County C-112 and C-29, then Killdeer Plains
Wildlife Area today. The roads were a mess and I'll have to wash the car to
tell what color it is. When we began it was still cold and walking wasn't bad,
but then as it warmed up and the snow melted, the fields became a series of
puddles and pools waiting to trap the unsuspecting birder.
At Wyandot County C-112 there were nice flocks of Snow Buntings, Lapland
Longspurs and Horned Larks and several Northern Harriers. The Snow Buntings and
Lapland Longspurs are quickly changing to their breeding plumage and looked
great. They were coming right up to the car which provided terrific views of
them.
From there we made a quick trip to Wyandot County C-29 where we located more
Snow Buntings, Lapland Longspurs and Horned Larks along with two Bald Eagles
at their nest site.
Then we off to Killdeer Plains WA. We met several people that had just
checked out the pine grove behind the barn on C-71 and they informed us that they
had not located anything there. We headed to the pine grove on C-108 where we
located Long-eared Owls. Driving the roads we located a large flock of
Red-winged Blackbirds, some Common Grackles, American Tree Sparrows, Rough-legged
Hawks, Northern Harriers, Bald Eagles, Pileated Woodpeckers and lots of
Eastern Meadowlarks. At Pond 27 there was a nice variety of waterfowl including
three species of swans and a nice selection of ducks. At Washburn Road we
located a large mixed flock of Snow Buntings, Lapland Longspurs and Horned Larks.
On our way out we finished with a couple of Short-eared Owls.
