I birded several areas along the Scioto River in urban Columbus this morning, with a side trip up the Olentangy. I was searching for early migrants on this cool, clear morning, with only limited success. Later in the afternoon, I visited some parts of 3-Creeks Park as well. Only a few of the hardiest early migrants were present, and the bulk of waterfowl migration appears to have moved to northern Ohio. Highlights included

Black-cr.Night Herons - at least 8 were sunning themselves at their winter colony along the Olentangy across from the OSU Drake student union. These birds probably won't stick around too much longer, but where they go remains a mystery.

Dabbling ducks - nothing but Mallards & Black Ducks, and not many of these on the high, fast rivers.

Diving Ducks - no Ring-necks or scaup, but there were still 20+ Hooded Mergansers around the backwater at Whittier.

Other Waterfowl - a few pied-billed grebes and 5-6 cormorants were also at Whittier.

Raptors - not much. A few Turkey Vultures were still hanging around Griggs dam and 3-Creeks, and a Red-tail was around the OSU wetlands.

Kinglets - Golden-crowns were at several locations, and single Ruby-crowns were at the OSU wetlands and Griggs, so these early migrants are starting to puch through.

Sparrows - Song sparrows were singing everywhere in numbers, fighting over territories. Whittier also had a singing Field Sparrow, many Juncos, and several lingering White-throats.

Blackbirds - lots of redwings at every stop, and a few cowbirds at most stops. Only Whittier had significant numbers of grackles
