It's very late so tonight I'll only include the highlites, and will post
the complete list tomorrow. There were large numbers and a large
diversity of waterfowl at KPWA today. At Pond 27 there were 5 Greater
White-fronted Geese and 10 Wood Ducks. In spite of a lot of activity
(horses and dogs) around the Sportsmen's Center, I found the Northern
Shrike along TH 108 at 6:00 pm on the west side. The bird was perched
in a small tree north of the row of trees that forms the north border of
the very open field opposite and north of the Sportsman's Center. It
flew into the thick brush that surrounds a small pond to the north. I
checked the whole area north to CH 71 and west to TH 123, but did not
find the bird again. At the intersection of CH 71 and TH 123, there was
a flock of about 200 blackbirds containing an estimated 20 Rusty
Blackbirds, a few Common Grackles but mostly Red-winged Blackbirds. I
checked for Brewer's blackbirds but did not find any. When I left the
area at about 7:00 pm, there were two Short-eared Owls, one perched on a
snag and one on top of a tree, north of the area where I saw the shrike,
and south of CH 71. Along CH 115 on the west side and south of CH 71,
there was another Short-eared Owl perched on a treetop.
