While trying to locate rock pigeon nests under the bridge on East Main
Street, near downtown Newark, I flushed a black-crowned night heron. What a
surprise! Although, the habitat is pretty similar to that along the
Olentangy River near OSU where they over-winter, so I guess I shouldn't be
that surprised. Anyway, something nice on a raw March day, even if it was a
transient. It made #175 for Licking Co. for me.

As for the rock pigeon nests, I found some empty nests that I suspect belong
to them. And, on the building closest to the bridge, someone has installed
a big plastic owl and barbs all around the perimeter of the roof. And, I
did see 5 rock pigeons flying around the vicinity, stopping on the bridge
supports and overhead wires. (During the winter, it was not unusual to see
flocks of 20+ in the downtown area.) However, I don't think that goes
beyond the OS code for OBBA II. Give me time!

Who would have thought that the block that contains downtown Newark
(59D6CE), the Owens Corning plant and landfill, some pretty rough housing,
and really uninspiring habitat, would yield so many interesting birds! (I
fully expect to verify nesting for common nighthawk this summer!)
