Back in February during the GBBC I saw two red-tailed hawks courting and
I've been looking for their nest ever since. I found it yesterday evening
about a quarter of a mile southeast (if it is indeed the same couple) so I
got up early this morning and was at Lazelle Woods Park by 8:30 trying to
find confirmation of red-tail breeding. I saw an adult red-tail drop food
into the nest and then fly to a nearby tree where he sat. I didn’t see
any little heads peeking up from the nest nor did I detect any movement
inside the nest. It may have been the male dropping off food for the
incubating female.
As I was leaving the park I noticed two killdeer in the field near the
front of the park. The female was following about five feet behind the
male. The male stopped when he got to a certain point and turned around
to look at the female. She walked toward him and then stopped at a point
about three feet to his right. He turned to face her and then walked
toward her. He hopped up on top of her and began to lower himself onto
her. What followed was such a flurry of tail feathers that it was
impossible to tell which were hers and which were his.
