Post-Doctoral Researcher in Science Education

A full-time position is available for a Post-Doctoral Researcher to work on a project supported by the National Science Foundation’s Teacher Professional Continuum Program. The position is initially for 1-year and will be renewable for an additional year depending on funding and satisfactory performance of project responsibilities. A second postdoctoral position may be offered, depending on availability of funding. The Post-Doctoral Researcher will join a team that includes scientists/science education researchers from three science departments, a school of education, a teacher outreach center, and an education research center*.
The project uses pedagogical context knowledge (PCxK) as a framework to examine changes in pre-service and in-service K-8 teachers’ understandings of science and pedagogy across a reform-based Professional Development Continuum. Our Continuum is a core curriculum of inquiry-based science and education courses for elementary education majors. The PCxK framework extends research on pedagogical content knowledge by linking the intellectual transformations that inquiry-based approaches demand to the transformed self-understandings that shape the change process. The study design incorporates qualitative and quantitative methods to examine different facets of teacher knowledge development across several longitudinal cohorts of pre-service, new, and experienced teachers.
Responsibilities: Under the direction of the project investigators, the Post-Doctoral Researcher will analyze data from open-ended surveys, interviews, and content essays, and contribute to the preparation of conference presentations and manuscripts for publication. The Post-Doctoral Researcher will also coordinate project activities; supervise graduate and undergraduate assistants; collect data and manage an extensive project data set.
Requirements: Candidate must have a bachelors degree (or higher) in a science field and a Ph.D. in science education, or a Ph.D. in a science field and significant experience conducting education research. A strong background in qualitative data analysis is required. A successful candidate must possess excellent organizational skills, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to work well both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
