Hello Ohio Birders,

I agree with Jim Glover that whippoorwills are not common in Clintonville
(where I also live) but they are more frequent during migration than our
records indicate because they call less frequently on migration than when on
territory. I have not seen any yet this season, but I have found them
during the day in past years by scrutinizing large horizontal tree branches
especially at the edges of open areas (e.g. Greenlawn Cemetery, Whittier
Peninsula in Colukbus) or just after dark foraging around lights. (Maybe I
encounter them because both the whippoorwills and I are looking for large
moths.)

Happy birding,

Dave Horn
