At the Honda Wetland area of Glacier Ridge Metro Park (Union County,
northwest of Columbus) today, there were three Mallards perched in a large
tree in the middle of the marsh. I first saw two hens from the boardwalk,
about half-way up the tree (which I estimated to be 80-100 feet tall). I
continued to bird around the marsh, and occasionally checked the tree. The
two hens remained in the tree, although they moved around a bit. After more
than an hour, I returned to the boardwalk with my scope and was showing the
strange sight to a couple of novice birders when a drake landed near the two
hens. After a few seconds the drake and one hen flew away, but just circled
the area for perhaps a minute, then both returned to the tree. At that point
the drake and one hen perched on the branch where they had started, the
other hen perched almost straight above them, closer to the top of the tree.
They remained in these locations until I left about 15 minutes later.

I have a couple of photos, which I unsuccessfully tried to post on
Rarebird.org. If anyone wants to see them I will be happy to e-mail them.

Other birds of note at the wetlands included Ring-necked Ducks, Northern
Shovelers, American Coots, a pair of Blue-winged Teal, one hen Bufflehead,
and at least two Eastern Meadowlarks.
