We have observed a pair of red-breasted nuthatches visiting our mixed
nut/seed feeder since Oct. 23, 2007. This is a commercial bag of mixed seed/nuts.
We also provide homemade peanut butter suet cakes with black oil sunflower
mixed in. They seem to avoid the suet but love the commerical mix. At first
they would feed as a pair; now, the male and the female feed separately.
They never fly off in the same direction--sometimes north, sometimes south,
sometimes west, sometimes east; and they are impossible to follow. It's
interesting to watch such a small bird fly off with half a peanut in its beak--it's
got to ruin its aerodynamics.
This means that these two have been with us for 6 months and 10 days (if
they are the same pair).
