much frenzied chipping, buzzing and bird calling in the vegetation of the woods just south of the dunes nature preserve this morning (05/18/2008) at headlands beach state park led emil bacik and jerry talkington to investigate all the chatter and commotion. at this time of year it was thought that a roosting eastern screech owl was buried in the vegetation. the bird was flushed out and jerry found it just inside the coast guard property - it was a northern saw-whet owl!!!!. this tiny owl was being mobbed by the resident blue jays, american robins, and northern cardinals and also migrant warblers such as american redstarts and black-throated blue warblers. certainly this bird was very much a surprize at this time in the month of may.
