This site is the area inside the large circular wall on the Lorain city
lakefront just east of the Black River. Go north on one of the
streets--Colorado for example--just east of the bridge on Rte 6 and go
down to the marina. Walk in from the parking lot.
The Corps of Engineers has dumped dredge spoil from the harbor into
this spot for years. For many of those years this was a great
shorebirding spot because mudflats predominated in the landscape, and
gulls and terns also gathered here in great numbers. The willow thickets
attracted passerines from warblers to redpolls seasonally.
As the impoundment filled up, its hydrology changed, and phragmites
took over. Because the soil inside is made up of gunk dredged from
Ohio's most polluted stream, few people but birders saw much of a future
in it, but over the past year a great deal of landscaping has been done
to make pools and pathways on the site, and the birdlife has improved.
It's possible this spot will regain some of its former luster as a site
to see migratory birds. For a taste of what it used to be like, see the
entries in this forum from ten years ago at
http://aves.net/birdnews/past0898.htm ; more detailed directions are
there (though some details are out of date). DeLorme 40:A-1; aim for the
eastern of the two marina symbols. If shorebirds are returning there,
someone deserves some commendation; I hope the folks in Lorain will keep
us posted.
