There were a few good birds today at Big Island Wildlife Area. As I
arrived at 7am, Jed Burtt and I pulled off road and I quickly realized
there were lots of shorebirds in the area. It didn't take me long to
find 3 BLACK-NECKED STILTS feeding in the shallows.
Pictures can be seen here-

A complete list of shorebirds of the area:

Killdeer- everywhere
Semipalmated Plover- 6
Black-necked Stilt- 3, always 2 stilts separated from another: the
lone stilt was a male, and the two associating with each other were a
male and a female
Spotted Sandpiper- 3
Dunlin- 23
Pectoral Sandpiper- 1
Least Sandpiper- 2
Semipalmated Sandpiper- 8
Peep sp.- 30, white spots on other side of pool, too much blur to tell
Wilson's Phalaropes- 13- 5 pairs, 2 lone males, and an additional
female, same area as stilts

Like Bill Whan described, the pools that the birds were using were
west of the intersection of SR 95 and Herr Rd. The stilts were very
close to the road at one point, as were the phalaropes, so be careful
when approaching the birds, as I found they can be a bit skittish,
though certainly better than other shorebirds.

Good birding,

Sean
