Linda kept me company as I monitored my nest boxes at several areas of the
Hoover Nature Preserve this morning. It was a beautiful day both for the birds
in general, and more specifically to me, for the Prothonotary Warbler act
ivity. The female Prothonotary Warblers are beginning to return in numbers and
things are activity has picked up pace. At Oxbow Road there were 11 singing
males and we also observed 3 females. The back cove looked like it was an
episode of The Bachelor Game. There are 3 males with territories there and only 1
female present. The female made the rounds as the males sang in the sunlight
and tried to have her look at their perspective nest sites. Bachelor Number 3
on the east side won as she found a nest site (one of my nest boxes) that she
seemed to take to. The male from my perception was the brightest in color,
plus he is one of the males we banded in 2004. Home field advantage.

At Dustin Road we observed 9 male Prothonotary Warblers and 4 females,
although we heard 4 more males singing. We finished by checking a portion of Area
N. Linda didn't have boots which prevented further monitoring there. Still we
located 16 males and 4 females as well as hearing many more singing. It looks
 to be another productive year.

Not to discriminate, we did pay attention to the other birds. Some of the
more interesting species observed include:
Wood Duck (several pairs)
Spotted Sandpiper
Red-headed Woodpecker (two separate pairs)
Pileated Woodpecker
Great Crested Flycatcher
Warbling Vireo
Cliff Swallow
Gray-checked Thrush
Swainson's Thrush
