I watched a a loggerhead shrike do this exact same thing while I was living
in Florida. It attacked a young English sparrow and took it to a shrub about
40 ft. away from me. I walked over after the shrike left and the sparrow was
there with the back of its head missing and the brain eaten out. That was
the only damage that I could see. Maybe you have a shrike hanging around.

Subject: [Ohio-birds] Dead Sparrows in my backyard

Today while mowing I found 2 dead sparrows. Both of them had the back of
their heads open and looked like the brain was missing!!!

Does anyone have any idea as to what caused this?
