While in NE Ashtabula Co. working on some OBBA2 blocks, this morning I found a beautiful adult LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE in the very SW tip of Conneaut Twp. It was perched atop a hay bale along State Rd. A farmer was working a field across the street, and there are other fields still undisturbed in the vicinity. Perhaps the bird has better hunting in the cut field, with less cover for prey. It flew off after a couple minutes, and I didn't see any other family members. But it was late morning, and bird activity had already tailed off. Anyways, I birded in 5 townships between Plymouth and Conneaut harbor. Other birds of note were: wild turkey, green herons, 2 bald eagles, Am. kestrel, 7 Bonaparte's gulls, 2 great black-backed gulls, belted kingfishers, ruby-throated hummingbird, ~10 willow flycatchers, 15+ e. wood-pewees, great crested flycatcher, e. kingbirds, e. phoebes, yellow-throated vireos, warbling vireos, ~20 red-eyed vireos, bank swallows, n. rough-winged swallows,
~20 house wrens, Carolina wren, e. bluebirds, wood thrushes, blue-winged warbler, 3 cerulean warblers, Am. redstarts, hooded warblers, scarlet tanager, rose-breasted grosbeaks, indigo buntings, savannah sparrow, bobolink, and Baltimore orioles. Plus I got to see 4 covered bridges--the habitat and views there are stunning. I took a hike around Orwell Marsh on the way home, it held blue-winged teal, spotted sandpiper, red-headed woodpecker, purple martin, and tree swallows. Later,
Craig
