The culprit could well be a Grackle.  Here in the Cleveland area I've seen
them take House Sparrows, House Finches, and even a fledgling Starling.  I
periodically find the remains minus at least part of the head. My mother
recently announced that she's going to have to stop feeding the birds after
witnessing two such "murders," as she calls them.
