Fellow birders,

Linda Helm, Vicki Derr and I decided to chase the Black Rail at
Charlie's Pond today. If hearing is any measure, we had great success,
hearing the bird(s) six or seven times, from both sides of the road, around
5:00 PM. In my opinion, there were at least two. Several times we were
within 6-8 feet of this bird, as it called to us, but yet we could not see
it. None the less, it was still a life bird for all three of us, and while
not seen, it was heard so clearly and so often, there was no mistaking it
for anything else. Another birder actually did see the bird just before we
arrived, but I will not steal his thunder. Let him tell you.

Thanks to Paul Gardner for the timely post about this sighting. A lot
more people know about Charlie's Pond, and a lot of people got a life bird,
thanks to the internet. I can still remember dialing 221- WREN to hear Tom
Thompson tell us where the birds were.
