Good afternoon to all -
Please review carefully this message below from Mike Sanger regarding the CER committee meeting at BCCE. If you cannot attend BCCE or cannot attend the CER committee meeting, please send comments on the two proposals directly to Mike.
Thank you.

Stacey,

Would you please post the following message to the CER list serve? Thank you for your assistance.

Meeting of the CER Committee at the Indiana U BCCE
Time: Monday, July 28, 2008, 3:00-5:00 pm
Place: CHEM C001

Friends and members of the CER Committee,

We are planning to discuss two very important topics that have been on the burners for a while. The first (headed by me) will be the new proposed Early Career (or Mid Career) Award for Chemical Education Research and Teaching. The second (headed by Dawn Del Carlo and Bill Harwood, both at UNI) will be the proposal to create peer-reviewed chemical education research sessions at national ACS or BCCE meetings.

Early/Mid Career Award: The sponsor would like us to address both issues (CER and Teaching). I have attached a VERY rough draft of the proposal as it now stands. I expect it to change IMMENSELY after our discussions at this meeting. Things that are very tentative or open to debate/consensus are italicized (our comments that will not appear in the final draft are in capital italics). The draft is also written in the past tense in many cases even though we aren't yet done with it (e.g., we say that the CER community has discussed it, even though we are still in the process of discussing it, etc.).

Some major questions to think about before the meeting:
(1) Do we want/need this award? Will it cause more bad than good?
(2) Should it be an Early Career or Mid Career award?
(3) How do we define Early/Mid Career?
(4) Should the teaching and research parts be linked or separate?
(5) How will we assess/evaluate the research/teaching?
(6) What information should be requested for the nomination packet? Required vs. optional?
(7) Any other pressing questions you have!!!

Peer-Reviewed Sessions: Even though I just heard about this proposal last spring, it has been the topic of discussion for some time and has been in the works (to some degree) for quite a while.

Some major questions to think about before the meeting (my apologies to Dawn and Bill--I made up these questions; they may have different ones they want answered...):
(1) Do we want/need these sessions? Will they cause more bad than good?
(2) What additional work will have to be done? By the presenters? By the organizers?
(3) Will they need to be advertised earlier than other sessions?
(4) What happens to presenters who are not accepted into the sessions?
(5) What should these sessions look like?
(6) Any other pressing questions you have!!!

All are welcome to attend the meeting, and the agenda allows for discussion of topics that are near-and-dear to the CER community. I look forward to seeing as many of you who can make it at this meeting in a few weeks. If you cannot attend the meeting but would like to share your opinions with the committee, please send them to me before Friday July 25, 2008 (when I will be leaving for the meeting).
