I think this Smithsonian field guide by Ted Floyd is actually a new
field guide. It's copyright date is 2008 and I haven't seen it in any
form previously. There was a two volume set (Eastern/Western) from the
Smithsonian that dates back a decade or so written by Fred Alsop, is it
possible that is the volume you were thinking of? I'll have to check
out the Floyd book. If anyone is in the market for a good up to date
field guide, have a look at the National Wildlife Federation's Field
Guide to Birds of North America by Edward S. Brinkley. Brinkley is a
gifted writer as well as one of North America's premier bird ID
specialists. Give this book a try as well, it's laid out very well and
has superb illustrations.

Regards,

Greg (Fairborn, OH)
