Forwarding this message on behalf of Bill Whan: Road Runner is not
cooperating at all with the Ohio-Birds list!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We found two adult yellow-crowned night-herons today at the nest over
the street in front of 211 Preston Rd. This is as late as I've ever seen
them at this site. Relying on second-hand news and discussions with local
night-heron mavens, here is my guess as to why.
A couple of months back I heard news that two eggs had been found
broken in the street beneath this nest. Some locals reported this occurred
after a particularly violent spring storm. Sounds likely, as predators would
of course have eaten the eggs. The nest farther north along Preston Rd had
better luck, and I later saw four healthy fledging young there.
Today the northern nest looked empty, but news from locals that birds
remained on the southern nest was certainly right. I am also told at least
one "small" bird had been seen in the recent past there, presumably a
nestling. One could easily have been present today, but not visible to us.
Neighborhood observers say the birds are usually gone by the 4th of
July. I've seen them as late as mid-month, but a second nesting seems the
reason for late stay. Anyway, there are still some of these prolific and
persistent birds to be seen.
