Stepping in for Charlie while he took a 'day off' from Hoover, I visited many of the access points along the reservoir from Oxbow Island south yesterday afternoon, mostly focusing on waterbirds. The water level at Hoover is very high for this time of year, so the shorebirding here this season looks to be a bust. Small numbers of cormorants were scattered over several stops, but other migrant waterfowl have yet to make an appearance. Ring-billed Gull numbers were up, but even more noteworthy were 3 FORSTER'S TERNS gliding and diving in the area between Oxbow Island and the Sunbury causeway; this is about as early as I've seen them in central Ohio. Turkey Vultures are also increasing in number, with 28+ in 3 locations along the reservoir, and an Osprey was soaring over Oxbow Island. Landbirds were unremarkable, except for small numbers of swallows and Eastern Kingbirds at several locations.
