I took my 8-year-old grandson "birking" on the bike path between Roxanna New-Burlington Road and Corwin this morning.  The first bird we observed was a mature Bald Eagle flying over the gravel pit pond on Roxanna-New Burlington Road.  What a tough act to follow!

  Other birds seen along the bike path:
  Green Heron (up close and cooperative - a real treat for my grandson!)
  Red-headed Woodpecker
  Downy Woodpecker
  Brown Thrashers (several)
  Gray Catbird
  Indigo Bunting
  Blue Grosbeak, male and female at mile marker 39, near a bench
  Field Sparrow
  Chipping Sparrow
  Red-eyed Vireo
  Carolina Wren
  Sharp-shinned Hawk
  Cooper's Hawk ( flying down the middle of the bike path in front of us, stopping and taking off again 4 times)
  American Goldfinch
  Eastern Pewee
  Eastern Kingbird
  Lots of robins, starlings, cardinals, chickadees, etc

  We were on bicycles and stopped only when we heard or saw activity (or when my grandson needed a break), so I'm sure we cycled right by additional species.

  The eagle was most likely one of the birds seen perching in a dead tree during the evening hours on a farm in the area for the past week.
