Spent some time on the back porch for the first time this fall looking
for nighthawks. Between 735 and 745 pm counted 116, with 90+ in one
flock. I can see about 20% of the sky here, unless I climb up on the
roof. All were flying strongly southward. I'll try to count more
regularly, especially toward the end of next month and early October,
when the last of them pass through. Their numbers have fallen in recent
decades, probably because of the declining numbers of goats to suck
along the way......
