The first small waves of landbird migrants are starting to filter through central Ohio now.  Already, groups of swallows & gnatcatchers have been on the move.  This morning at the south end of Alum Lake, I had small groups of Warbling Vireos, Yellow Warblers, and Baltimore Orioles, mostly foraging in the trees along the shore at New Galena.  There were also some kingbirds and Crested Flycatchers, as well as 3-4 flyover Purple Martins.  No waterfowl or raptors, however, and the gull flock at the beach was only Ring-bills (although 240 of them was a good #).

Some birds were still finishing up breeding. 10-12 Cliff Swallows were still swarming around the dam nesting area (just as at Hoover dam several days earlier, where they were feeding large nestlings), and White-eyed vireos and House Wrens were both feeding juveniles at New Galena.  An adult & juvenile Mockingbird were also hanging around the plantings alongside the dam.  Most years have some contrast of nesters and migrants at this time, but this year seems more so than most.  We should start hearing nighttime migrants in the next week or so.
