Even recognition of the weakness of generalizing on the basis of personal experience does not lessen the importanace of Bill Whan's notes on the current shorebird migration.I too am impressed by the shortage of reports and was inclined to attribute it to high water in many of our lakes. This does not explain the near total absence of shorebirds in such places as the Caesar Creek beach. Yesterday I went to the Mound Road site to view the Osprey nest and found none of the Osprey's in sight but did
find a small but growing area of mud, an area rich in shorebirds in past years. Even more discouraging was a trip to Spring Valley which has lots of available mud but not even a killdeer. It may be the migrants simply passed over the local available habitat or even that they are still to show up. I'm rooting for the latter.
Discouraged Birder Cheers,
Larry Gara, Wilmington
