Subject: Planet Ohio and Beyond... Red Crossbill Family




I had just returned home this morning and was returning a phone call when I glanced out the kitchen window and
saw this group.  I exclaimed to my friend that I'd never seen a Purple Finch in the yard this time of year.
I turned the camera on and with one hand tried to focus and took this shot.
Not easy with the lens that was on the camera!
They flew over to another feeder and I told her I really had to go because I wanted another
shot or two of the finch.
Here's the second decent ( not great ) shot I took of the male.

Never thought another thing about it as I had to leave again immediately.
Imagine my surprise when I finally got home this evening and downloaded the pic's to the computer
and saw this oddly shaped beak!
No wonder he didn't have the brown strip across the side of his head!
It's not a Purple Finch at all!  Although it is a Finch.
It was a Red Crossbill family! Papa, Mama and baby. (Baby on the right in the first picture.)
I'd love to see them again but I won't hold my breath!
