Our itinerary took us to the Bellevue pothole wetlands, Willow Point WA,
and Findlay Reservoir #1 today, and we have some reports worthy of mention.
The Bellevue area (Seneca Co C-34, Riddle Rd, South Ridge Rd, Bonham
Rd, Billman Rd was duller today. We had seven shorebird species after
three hours, but it was good to see fresh new juveniles, etc. Larry
Richardson clued us in to Willow Pt WA (a few miles east of Pickerel Ck
WA on Sandusky Bay), and we found very promising shorebird habitat at
the two impoundments just NE of the HQ. Nice flock of mixed-age stilt
sandpipers, juv s-b dowitchers, white-rumped SP and a few other commoner
species brought our species list to 13; Larry had a Baird's we didn't
relocate. Good selection of other birds, too. Consider including this
nice quiet spot on a Bellevue trip: it's only 10 mi north.
Findlay Res 1 is always a surprise. The barren rock dike and adjacent
water had 13 spotted sandpipers, 11 least sandpipers, 6 semipalmated
sandpipers, a pectoral sandpiper, 6 Caspian terns, 27 Bonaparte's gulls,
and at least two common loons. This is the first time in four Augusts
I've visited this spot without seeing buff-breasted sandpiper. Herbicide
spraying of the scanty grasses along the dike--necessary of course to
prevent terrorists from concealing themselves there--may have dissuaded
the buffies.
