The area the Western Kingbird was sighted is not yet open to visitors
without a Fernald escort. Cathy Geering and I went to the Fernald Preserve
early on Monday 9/8 to look for the Western Kingbird (I first saw the
posting on 9/7). We weren't aware that the area the kingbird was sighted is
off-limits, and spent a couple of hours unsuccessfully searching in very
heavy fog. Gary Stegner (a birder who works for Fernald) was alerted to our
presence and kindly took us on a tour of the preserve! No luck finding the
Western Kingbird. Per Gary, you can contact Fernald to arrange for an
escort.

The original post reporting the Western Kingbird at Fernald Nature Preserve
was
made to the Birding in Cincinnati website
(http://cincinnatibirds.com/goodbird/sighting.php). The entire post is
reproduced below. The date is given as Sept. 12, but this is an apparent
error,
as the following post by Jay Stenger dated Sept. 6 refers to it. The post
is
found far down the list surrounded by Sept. 6 posts, so I'm guessing the
correct date of the sighting is likely Sept 5/6.

None of the more recent posts mention the bird. Paul Wharton doesn't have
an
email listed in the website's directory.

Other Birders:

I was hoping for some migrant songbirds, but that didn't happen. It was
very
slow from that perspective, but the field birds made up for it. the
highlight
was an adult WESTERN KINGBIRD seen at close range in the company of 5
Eastern
Kingbirds. It was seen on a deer exclusion fence. I don't know how chasable
this bird will be, but to get to the area, come in the Willey Rd. entrance
and
before you get to the big pumping station, there is a roped off road on the
left with a dumpster along the side of the road. Walk down this road until
you
get to the second small blue pump house. The Kingbird was in the area to
the
right of the pumphouse. A pair of Sedge Wrens were also seen and heard in
the
field behind the visitor's center. That is also where the Bobolinks ,
Dickcissels, and Savannah sparrows were seen.
