Even though Ike's track took it north of us and I thought there would probably not be any hurricane birds till later this week, I decided to see if any birds were coming down with the strong northwest winds. I decided to check Conneaut in hopes of seeing some shorebirds. Although there were not a huge number of shorebirds, it was still pretty good this morning. I got there around 7:45 and stayed until 11:30. The three best birds all occurred during the first hour. An adult SABINE'S GULL and 2 adult POMARINE JAEGERS passed from east to west and each flew over the mudflat before disappearing over the breakwall. The jaegers got the shorebirds excited but didn't faze the gulls. I wonder if there may have been more as they were easy to miss. Adult Sabine's gulls and pomarine jaegers are uncommon in Ohio as we usually get immatures. I would imagine the hurricane was responsible for their presence. I just wonder if they were brought up from the gulf or were heading south with the strong northwest winds. There was some shorebirds moving, but not a lot of them.
