Matt and Adam,

Do to size comparison with eagle and shape of wings i would "guess" that this is a Broad-winged hawk.  If anyone differs, please let me know because I am still new at identifying raptors in flight.

My son took a series of pictures of this mature Bald Eagle at Sandy Ridge on
Sunday. When we looked at them on the computer we noticed a hawk in four of
the frames. He said it was soaring with the Eagle as it moved across the
marsh. The lens is 300mm and the Eagle and hawk were up high so this is the
best we can offer.

After some study I think it is a Cooper's, but the white spot between the
tail and the wings leaves me puzzled. It might be sun reflecting or it
might actually be white feathers. The broad wings and narrow tail suggest
Accipiter. The straight leading-edge of the wing suggests Cooper's over
Sharp-shinned. On one of the pictures I zoomed way in and the breast
appeared reddish and the tail appeared to have a well-defined terminal dark
band.

I left the pictures as they were so you can zoom-in yourself for more
details. I welcome your more expert opinions.

Regards,

Matt & Adam Valencic
