The five White Pelicans were still present on the East shore of Hoover Reservoir this morning between 7:30 am and 11:00 am. The best viewing location from land remains Oxbow Rd.

I paddeled over to the East shore in my kayak for a closer look and to check out the shorebird habitat. I remained at least 50 yards from the pelicans at all times and they seemed unconcerned and spent most of their time prenning.

There is a small amount of shorebird habitat at the back end of the "lagoon" that forms here in dry years. The water depth in the lagoon was still 8-24 inches so water level needs to drop a few more feet to obtain the full lagoon area. Overall, the same species of shorebirds as viewed from the boardwalk are present here. I also saw 1 Dunlin, 1 Greater Yellowlegs and 7 Semipalmated Sandpipers which I had not seen at the boardwalk. An adult Bald Eagle scattered the shorebirds once and again, the pelicans did not seem to be concerned. I carefully checked for Buff-breasted Sandpipers around the lagoon but could not find any. The habitat for these birds is not the same as past years as the small "grass" that usually sprouts on the higher points of the mudflats is very sparce.

At Weise Rd., the shorebird habitat is improving slightly but no new species were observed. Again, I carefully checked for Buff-breasted Sandpipers but could not find any.
