I got a chance to do a little birding on Middle Bass Island on Friday
afternoon and Saturday morning. I saw a Common Loon just north of Kuehnle
Wildlife Area between Middle Bass and North Bass-my first for this fall.
There were yellow-rumped warblers, dark-eyed juncoes, and white-throated
sparrows in abundance along the road sides, flying in and out of the wetland
at Kuehnle. Also saw a red-tailed hawk and six turkey vultures flying overhead.
The bald eagles that nested next to the Middle Bass Airport the last few
years are in the process of rebuilding. Their old nest went down in a big
wind storm this fall. Two adult eagles were working on a new nest right next
to the airfield on Friday.
