As expected, the cold front brought in some new birds today. I searched in eastern Mahoning Co., starting at Evans L. The whitecaps were pretty impressive, but birding was lackluster here. Best were 25 Am. coots, 14 killdeer, 2 Bonaparte's gulls, and belted kingfisher. Then down to Pine L., which was much better: gadwall, Am. wigeon, 15 n. shovelers, 30 lesser scaup, 10 greater scaup, 7 buffleheads, c. goldeneye, 2 hooded mergansers, 75 ruddy ducks, 2 pied-billed grebes, Am. coots, great blue herons, great egret, n. harrier, 10 Bonaparte's gulls, belted kingfisher, and 5 e. bluebirds were found. In nearby Beaver Twp. I added Am. black ducks, n. pintails, green-winged teal, ring-necked duck, greater yellowlegs, lesser yellowlegs, least sandpiper, pectoral sandpipers, and 25 Am. pipits. Back around home here in Poland Twp. were 10 wild turkeys, 4 chipping sparrows, and 20 dark-eyed juncos. One of the juncos was in plumage suggesting it had
some "Oregon" genes in it. It looked like a washed-out version of a typical female "Oregon" junco, definitely different from the usual "slate-colored" females I see here. Anyone else ever see any intermediate-type juncos here in Ohio? Later, Craig
