A northern shrike, the first appearance this fall, briefly joined four
blue jays at the top of the dead elm. They were harassing,
and in turn being harassed by two sharp shinned hawks. An
adult and a juvenile.

This (w/out the shrike) went on for well over an hour. A pileated
woodpecker flew in to the same elm, and was swiped at by
the sharpies. A flicker, no match for the acrobatics of the jays
and hawks, flapped over to the same tree and was quickly chased off
his perch. The blue jay numbers peaked at eleven birds.
