This is the Ohio Statewide Rare Bird Report for October 31, 2008.

of these sightings are desired by The Ohio Bird Records 
Committee. Careful observation, not ornithological expertise, is

Cackling Goose: Checking on the previously reported birds at the 
north end of Acton Lake, Hueston Woods State Park, Jay Lehman saw 
five cacklers on the 26th.

Long-tailed Duck: Bob Royse found a basic plumaged male at Deer 
Creek State Park on the 29th. It could not be relocated the next 
day.

Willet: Jack Stenger and Sean Williams found one from the Hoover 
Reservoir Boardwalk, Delaware County, on the 26th.

Hudsonian Godwit: Jack Stenger and Sean Williams found two from 
the Hoover Reservoir Boardwalk, Delaware County, on the 26th.

Red Phalarope: Reported as a flyover at Headlands Beach State 
Park on the 28th.

Franklin's Gull: The 26th was the day to be looking for them with 
reports from north of the Sunbury Causeway at Hoover Reservoir, 
Delaware County; from off of Harveysburg Road at Caesar Creek 
State Park; and from between the North Beach and the South Beach 
at Rocky Fork State Park.

Northern Shrike: The species is becoming widespread in the state 
at a rather early date. Reports this week were from the 25th at 
"Crane Creek"; on the 28th from Freyman Road at Cricket Frog Cove 
Park in southern Wood County; and from private land along Chagrin 
River Road at the Geauga - Cuyahoga County line on the 30th.

Nelson’s Sharp-tailed Sparrow: Ray Hannikman reported one from 
Headlands Beach State Park on the 28th.

White-winged Crossbill: One was reported as a flyover from 
Headlands Beach State Park on the 30th.
