Greetings birders -

A lakefront birding trip, with 10 participants, found a number of great birds today, with highlights of a single BRANT and a mixed flock of BLACK SCOTERS and SURF SCOTERS. There was a fair amount of waterfowl movement, with several flocks of distant scaup, mergansers, and bufflehead skirting over the lake. Here's the run-down:

ROCKY RIVER PARK (Beach Cliff Drive, Rocky River):
BRANT - 1 (single bird flying west; attempted to declare "land ho" west of Bradstreet's Landing)
Lesser Scaup - 8
Bufflehead - 8
Hooded Merganser - 1
Red-breasted Merganser - 3
Ring-billed, Herring, and a handful of Bonaparte's Gulls
Snow Bunting - 4 (early flybys)
Pine Siskin - 8 (2 different flocks)

CAHOON PARK (by Huntington Beach Reservation)
Red-breasted Merganser - 15

LAKEWOOD PARK (Lakewood)
Gulls beginning to be numerous
Eastern Phoebe - 1
Pine Siskin - 6

SIM'S PARK (Euclid)
Black Scoter - 14
Surf Scoter - 6
Red-breasted Merganser - 100+
Lesser Scaup - 2
American Black Duck - 3
(scoters very easily found and seen very well)
Golden-crowned Kinglet - 3

*Thanks to Nancy Anderson for updates on the scoters at Sim's.

best of birding -
Jen
